Where the Highest Mountains of Ukraine Are Located

 

The highest peaks of Ukraine are located in the Ukrainian Carpathians, which stretch across the territories of the Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, Lviv, and Chernivtsi regions. The largest number of high mountains can be found in the Chornohora Ridge, where peaks higher than 2000 meters are located.

 

This region is also known for its natural landmarks: mountain lakes, waterfalls, alpine meadows, and unique flora and fauna. That is why Chornohora is considered one of the most popular places for hiking in the Carpathians.

 

Top 5 Highest Mountain Peaks of Ukraine

 

Among dozens of Carpathian peaks, the 5 highest hold a special place. They attract tourists not only with their height but also with the incredible views that open from their summits.

 

Hoverla (2061 m)

 

Hoverla is the highest mountain in Ukraine and the most popular peak in the Carpathians. It is located on the border of the Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions within the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. The ascent to Hoverla is considered one of the easiest among the two-thousanders, which is why it is often chosen by tourists without extensive mountain hiking experience. The most popular route starts from the Zarosliak tourist base, but you can also ascend from the village of Lazeshchyna.

 

 

It is worth mentioning that the road to the "Zarosliak" base remains quite specific. If you rent a car in Lviv, choose crossovers with high ground clearance, since the last 10 km is a forest road with potholes where it will be difficult for a sedan.

 

If you are traveling on foot, the fastest ascent is the "blue" trail from the "Zarosliak" base. It is steep but direct. If your knees are not ready for heavy strain, choose the "green" trail — it is 1.5 km longer but has a gentler traverse.

 

At the foot of the mountain, the Prut River begins, and nearby you can find the picturesque Prut Waterfall. From the summit, there is a panoramic view of the Chornohora Ridge and the neighboring Carpathian peaks.

 

Brebeneskul (2035 m)

 

Brebeneskul is the second highest peak in Ukraine. It is located in the central part of the Chornohora Ridge between Mount Menchul and Mount Rebra. The mountain has a rounded shape and does not stand out sharply among the neighboring peaks, but its surroundings impress with their beauty. At its foot lies Lake Brebeneskul — the highest mountain lake in Ukraine.

 

 

Keep in mind: the sun sets behind the ridge very early (around 16:00–17:00 in summer), so after that time it quickly becomes cold near the lake. Setting up tents near the water is prohibited by the eco-inspection (this is a protected area), so plan your overnight stay slightly higher on the terraces.

 

During the hike to this peak, you can see alpine meadows, stone screes, and picturesque mountain valleys. Nearby there are also popular tourist locations such as Vukhatyi Kamin and the Dzembronya Waterfalls.

 

Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi (2028 m)

 

Pip Ivan is one of the most famous peaks of the Carpathians. It is easily recognizable thanks to the old stone building on the summit — the legendary "White Elephant" observatory built in the 1930s. The mountain is located near the Ukrainian-Romanian border and is part of the Chornohora Ridge. Most often, tourists start the ascent from the village of Dzembronya, which is considered one of the highest mountain settlements in Ukraine.

 

From the summit, one of the best panoramas of the Carpathians opens up — you can see dozens of mountain peaks and long ridges stretching for tens of kilometers.

 

 

Petros (2020 m)

 

Petros is the fourth highest peak in Ukraine and one of the most beautiful mountains of the Chornohora Ridge. It is located not far from Hoverla but is separated from it by a deep mountain valley.

 

 

The mountain is known for its changeable character: the weather here can change very quickly, and during thunderstorms the summit often finds itself among lightning and clouds. That is why locals sometimes call it the "thunder mountain."

 

The most popular routes to Petros start from the villages of Kvasy or Lazeshchyna. The ascent is somewhat more difficult than Hoverla, but the summit offers an extremely beautiful view of the entire Chornohora Ridge.

 

The descent or ascent from the saddle side (from Hoverla) is a steep scree slope (small loose stones). In rainy weather it becomes extremely slippery. If you are a beginner, it is better to ascend from the village of Kvasy — this route is longer but safer and very gradual.

 

Hutyn Tomnatyk (2016 m)

 

Hutyn Tomnatyk is another peak of the Chornohora Ridge that is included in the list of the highest mountains of Ukraine. It is located near Lake Brebeneskul and has a very picturesque landscape.

 

 

The modern relief of this mountain was formed under the influence of ancient glaciers, so here you can see large stone screes, alpine meadows, and unique natural landscapes. It is from Hutyn Tomnatyk that the best view of Lake Brebeneskul opens (from above it looks like a blue eye). There are significantly fewer crowds of tourists here than on Hoverla.

 

In this area many rare high-mountain plants grow, some of which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. That is why this territory belongs to the protected natural zone of the Carpathians. Here you can often see rhododendron (chervona ruta) blooming in June. 

 

Remember: collecting plants in this area is strictly prohibited, as it is part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve

 

Seasonality: When Should You Plan the Ascent?

 

The weather in the Carpathians is quite changeable, so it is important to choose the right time for your trip so that the hike is comfortable and safe.

 

June (peak blooming season): the best time to see the blooming "chervona ruta" (rhododendron) on the slopes of Hutyn Tomnatyk. However, be prepared for prolonged rains — June is considered the wettest month in the mountains.

 

July and August (stability): the warmest period. Daylight hours are long, which allows you to cover long distances (for example, Petros + Hoverla in 1 day). The downside: water sources on the ridge may dry up, and Hoverla has the largest crowds of tourists during this time.

 

September and October (golden autumn): the ideal time for photographers and those who enjoy peace and quiet. The air becomes clear, and visibility reaches its maximum. However, from mid-October onward, the first nighttime frosts and even snow are possible in Chornohora.

 

Winter (for pros only): ascending the two-thousanders from December to March is mountaineering. Without crampons, an ice axe, and avalanche safety knowledge, climbing Petros or Hoverla is deadly dangerous because of icy slopes and cornices.

 

Important for drivers: the weather on the Carpathian mountain passes (for example, in Kryvopillia or near Vorokhta) can differ significantly from sunny Lviv. Even if it is +15°C in the city, cold, fog, or even black ice are possible on the approaches to mountain routes in May or October. Tips for Hiking in the Carpathians

 

To make sure your hike brings pleasure rather than turning into a survival challenge, make use of the experience of professional guides:

 

-   Forget about Google Maps: in the highlands of Chornohora, they often fail to see the trails or suggest dangerous "shortcut" routes. Install offline maps from Mapy.cz or download the OpenStreetMap (OSM) layer. They show marked routes and water sources in detail;

-   The "three-layer" rule: even if it is a hot +25°C in Bukovel or Yaremche, it may be +8°C at the top of Petros or Pip Ivan, with wind gusts up to 15–20 m/s. Always carry thermal underwear, a fleece jacket, and a windproof мемbrane jacket;

-   Digital safety: be sure to install the "Rescue in the Mountains" app and register your route with the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. In case of bad weather or loss of orientation, this will allow rescuers to get your exact GPS coordinates in one click;

-   Timing: start your route no later than 8:00 a.m. The weather in the Carpathians usually gets worse after 2:00 p.m., and it is important to have enough time to pass the most difficult exposed sections of the ridge before the afternoon thunderstorms begin;

-   Hydration: there are few water sources on the Chornohora Ridge itself. Fill your bottles at the foot of the mountains (for example, near the Prut Waterfall or in the Hadzhyna tract), allowing for at least 2 liters of water per person for a summer crossing.
